El Doctor
Matryek and Cohen win Princess Grace
2006 Princess Grace Awards have been announced. In the aspiring Film
artist category, recipients include our own David Chaim Cohen and Miwa
A. Matryek.
David has been awarded a Undergraduate Film Scholorship, Experimental Film.
David Chaim Cohen has been an experimental filmmaker for five years; in
high school he realized that moving images were the perfect vehicle for
his electronic music. After entering CalArts for his undergraduate
degree, he began working extensively in 16mm, and discovered
hand-processing, painting on film, and optical printing. His most recent
works are /Untitled/ and /Rusted Sodom/. Currently, David is working on
a new, completely hand-painted film.
Miwa has been awarded a Graduate Film Scholarship, Experimental
Animation Film.
Miwa A. Matreyek is currently studying as an M.F.A. student in the
experimental animation program at CalArts. She was a physics major for
the first two years of her undergraduate career at the University of
California, Santa Barbara before she switched to fine art. Miwas
interest in science might explain why much of her art work relates to
science fiction. Some of her recent animation works are: /Grater City/
and /Digitopia/. Her most recent collaborative performance projects are
/Subterranean Heart/ and /Ozeanflug/.
