Parker premieres at Berlin

Kelly Parker's (MFA student in Program Film & Video) South Main will be premiering at the Berlin Film Festival next week.

South Main is an intimate portrait of three single African American mothers as they struggle to secure new homes and raise their families after being evicted from an apartment complex in South Los Angeles. I completed the film while studying at CalArts. For those of you that will be in Berlin, I would love to see you at one of the screenings! Alsawaf takes prize at Black Maria

Sahar Alsawaf's film Uncle Ma'An has been selected as Jury's CItation-2nd Prize for our 27th Black Maria Film + Video Festival. Alsawaf is an MFA student in the Experimental Animation Program.

Lu Screens Internationally

Wenchung Lu, student, BFA3, Character Animation program was invited to screen his film "Word Fisher's Secret Piano", at the 14th Annual Shorttakes Film Festival, May 2007. Additionally, Wenchung was invited to screen his piece "The Shoes" at the Munich Int'l Short Film Festival, June 14-20, 2007. The screening was held at the Mathaeser, the largest movie theatre in Munich.

Yamayoshi screen at Vilnius

MFA3 student, Program in Film and Video, Chie Yamayoshi's three films - We Have Decided to Live in the Air, I Want to Make a Video about You and Re: Chronicle of a Summer were invited to the 12th Vilnius International Film Festival "Kino pavasaris" (http://www.kinopavasaris.lt), the main event of independent cinema in Lithuania, which takes place in Vilnius, the Capital of Lithuania, from March 22 to April 5, 2007.

Two Students win at College Television Awards

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation, 28th Annual College Television Awards were announced and they include two CalArts students in the Animation/Traditional category:

1st Place - Ian Worrel: "Icarus & The Tree Herder." Ian is a third-year, Character Animation program student.

2nd Place - April (Seo Jin) Lee: "Love Pills." April is a fourth-year, Character Animation program student.

ATAS fetes college tries:
Sixteen student filmmakers accept awards

College filmmakers got a taste of the limelight Saturday night as the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation handed out kudos at its 28th annual College Television Awards.

Sixteen students accepted first-prize awards, each worth $2,000, for their undergrad or graduate film or video projects. Winners came from Brigham Young U., *CalArts*, USC, Northwestern U., Art Center College of Design, City College of New York, UCLA, U. of Florida, Robert Morris U.
and St. Cloud State U.

"Survivor" producer Mark Burnett received the foundation's first Innovation in Television Award.

Winning works were publicly exhibited Sunday at the College Television Awards Festival, held at the TV Academy's North Hollywood headquarters. The Sundance Channel, MTVU and Plum TV will also air the honored productions.

Tom Bergeron, co-host of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," hosted the black-tie gala at Culver Studios.

Skrzeszewska plays at Oberhausen

Alina Skrzeszewska, MFA 2 student, Program in Film and Video, School of Film/Video has been invited to screen her film "Stories of a Promised Land - part 1" at the Oberhausen short film festival (May 3-8) Alina's film will be screened Saturday, May 5th.

Entirely dedicated to experimental, avant-garde, independent, alternative and underground cinema, the Festival des Cinemas Differents de Paris presents a carte blanche to CalArts as part of his eight edition. Twenty-six works completed by film/video-makers recently enrolled at CalArts or recent graduates will be presented in two different evenings, on Saturday December 9 at 10:00 pm and Monday December 11 at 10:00 pm.

This program was initiated by French experimental filmmaker Patrick Bokanowski, who was in residence at CalArts and REDCAT last February. Betzy Bromberg and Bérénice Reynaud made a first pre-selection, and then Patrick Bokanowski, assisted by Paris-based American critic Pip Chodorov, decided the final program.

Yamayoshi screens at Hammer

MFA 3 Chie Yamayoshi's experimental piece I Want to Make a Video about You will screen in November at UCLA Hammer Museum as part of the LA Freewaves 10th Celebration of Experimental Media Arts. Work description::: I Want to Make a Video about You, Video by Chie Yamayoshi "I am looking for someone who can pretend to be my family member, best friend or lover...," Looking for intimacy on the Internet. Rendezvous with strangers. Dealing with cyber-culture, the reality TV phenomenon, and racial stereotypes, this narrative probes the gray area between truth and fiction, private and public, danger and pleasure, intimacy and anonymity, and fantasy and identity.

Tippet screens at the American Cinematheque

Jason Tippet, BFA 2, Program in Film and Video has been invited to screen his film "Nanie" (rt-3:20, 2006, super 8 color negative) at the 2006 Attack of the 50 Foot Reels. The screening will take place November 6, 2006, 7:30pm, American Cinematheque at the the Egyptian Theatre.

Students screen at London International

2006 London International Animation Festival, London, August 22-27, 2006, International Student Animation Panorama category (32 films, 12 schools, wild ideas, raw energy...the following student films were selected and screened at this festival: The Bastard by Dave Quion, Cat Food by Nate Wragg and Someday Never by Stephen Hawkins.

Students screen in China

The 3rd China International Animation and Digital Arts Festival (CICDAF
2006), Beijing, China 9/27-10/5, 2007: the following CalArts student
films were selected to be screened: Speech of Freedom by Nancy
Parczyk, MFA 3, Exp. Animation; Stalemate by In-Young Sung, MFA 2,
Film Directing Program (Character Animation alumnus), Jurassic Chef by
Minki Song, Character Animation alumnus, and The Possum by Chris Choy,
Character Animation alumnus. Chris Choy was awarded the "Special
Distinction Award in Student Work Category" for his film The Possum.
Congrats to all the filmmakers!

Panagopoulos screens at Ojai

Apolonia Panagopoulos' film, The Tropic of Faxafloi, will be representing CalArts in the "Into the Limelight" student film program/ competition at the Ojai Film Fest, which runs from October 12-15. The program of shorts by student filmmakers from 12 U.S. film schools including CalArts screens at 8pm, friday October 13, 2006. The 12 student filmmakers will be competing for a $60,000 panavison rental package.

Matryek and Cohen win Princess Grace

2006 Princess Grace Awards have been announced. In the aspiring Film
artist category, recipients include our own David Chaim Cohen and Miwa
A. Matryek.

David has been awarded a Undergraduate Film Scholorship, Experimental Film.
David Chaim Cohen has been an experimental filmmaker for five years; in
high school he realized that moving images were the perfect vehicle for
his electronic music. After entering CalArts for his undergraduate
degree, he began working extensively in 16mm, and discovered
hand-processing, painting on film, and optical printing. His most recent
works are /Untitled/ and /Rusted Sodom/. Currently, David is working on
a new, completely hand-painted film.

Miwa has been awarded a Graduate Film Scholarship, Experimental
Animation Film.
Miwa A. Matreyek is currently studying as an M.F.A. student in the
experimental animation program at CalArts. She was a physics major for
the first two years of her undergraduate career at the University of
California, Santa Barbara before she switched to fine art. Miwa�s
interest in science might explain why much of her art work relates to
science fiction. Some of her recent animation works are: /Grater City/
and /Digitopia/. Her most recent collaborative performance projects are
/Subterranean Heart/ and /Ozeanflug/.

Quion in X-FUN

Dave Quion, bfa 3, Character Animation will be interviewed by X-FUN
magazine, a Taiwan-based visual art bilingual magazine, regarding his
"Best Student film" award at the Melbourne Int'l Animation Film Festival
for his film "The Bastard".

Quion Wins at Melbourne

Dave Quion, student, Character Animation was awarded the BEST STUDENT FILM at the Melbourne Int'l Animation festival June 2006 for his film The Bastard.

Student Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has honored thirteen students from nine different colleges and universities in the 33rd annual Student Academy Awards competition. Three films in each category, including Animation, will go on to compete for the gold, silver and bronze prizes at the June 10th awards presentation ceremony. Our own Chris Choy, alumni, Character Animation has been selected in this competition for his piece *"The Possum". We all look forward to the news announcement June 10th. The top three toon contenders, whittled down from a field of eight finalists, includes "The Shoes" by *Wenchung Lu*, student, Character Animation. Congratulations to both Chris and Wenchung!!! A Student Academy Award win puts a film in the running for an Oscar. The Student Academy Awards were established by the Academy in 1972 to support and encourage excellence in filmmaking at the collegiate level.

Judice pens cover story for WAVEMAG

Kuckenbaker picked up by UNESCO

Cy Kuckenbaker, student, MFA 3, Film Directing Program, School of Film/Video had a short film titled 'Toshininkyste', in English 'The Barker' picked up by UNESCO. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) will give the film patronage which means they want they're name on the film itself, and they've already put it up on their UNESCO Lithuania website, unesco.lt.

Sesame Street Internships Announced

The Sesame Street Internship/Scholarship has been awarded to Dominic Bisignano and Evelyn Lee, MFA 2's, Experimental Animation program. This opportunity includes working with Sesame Street Productions and also provides a scholarship.

Villard wins at Fantoche

JJ Villard, BFA 2004, Character Animation, screened his film SON OF SATAN, which was well received at the FANTOCHE film festival. JJ won the prize for BEST VISUAL in the international competition--which brings 2000 Swiss Francs (at least 1500 US I bet), a little soft doll, and a certificate of the selection for Mr. Villard.

Additionally, JJ Villard won the GRAND Prize for student animation for his film "Chestnuts Icelolly at Ottawa animation festival. "A story with great contemporary relevance told with edgy rawness in
stark and striking black and white."

Inukai wins at Short Shorts

Mari Inukai, alumni, BFA, Character Animation was award for Best Japanese Short, at the Short Shorts Film Festival Expo 2005, for her animated film Orange and Blue. Unfortunately the director, Mari Inukai was unable to attend the ceremony but her sister, Rei Suzuki, was present on her behalf. She presented a brief statement from Mari stating that the film is about love and inspired by her deep love and affection for her child. Everyone is extremely pleased that to recognize this emotional and stunning animated short film.

Vu screens in China

Benjamin Vu, MFA 3, Experimental Animation program had been invited to screen his short film "Noobies" in the official competition at the China International Cartoon and Digital Art Festival Sept. 28- Oct. 1, 2005.

MacLeod screens at Munich

Steven MacLeod, BFA 3-student, Character Animation program has been invited to screen his work "My Little Obsessive Compulsive Friend" at the Munich International Festival of Film Schools November 19-26, 2005. Steven was equally invited to attend the festival with an all expense paid by the festival. Congratulations Steven!

Damiano screens at Hot&Cold

Lori Damiano, MFA, Experimental Animation Program will be contributing to the Hot & Cold exhibit Oct. 25th - Nov. 4th at the California College of Art's PlaySpace Gallery in San Francisco. She will be screening part 1 of her (in progress) thesis film.

Hayden screens recent work

Marianne Hayden, MFA student, Experimental Animation
screened her recent films (animation and live action) 'Other Worlds' and ' 'cause That's What Happened' at the Pantheon Gallery: Xperimental 4.0, March (Cyprus) and International Funtup Film and Art Festival 2005, May (Milwaukee, WI). Winterlude , a live action 'mockumentary' feature, will be premied in Baltimore March 2, 2005. Marinanne played 'the girlfriend' in the 'relationship'. Ghostwatcher . She played Nikki, the best friend. It was released on DVD last October and is in Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, Netflix, etc.

Jimenez finalist for Adobe Design Award

Adobe Design Achievement Award: Animation finalist : Sean Jimenez, student,
Character Animation Program. Sean has been invited to attend the ADAA
awards ceremony at the Guggenheim in NYC, Thursday, July 21st. The
finalist's work will be on display at this exciting event, where they will
be formally recognized and awarded on stage.

Butera screens Coffeezilla at Crosstown

Nicholas Butera, BFA2, Character Animation has been selected to screen his animated film "Coffeezilla" at the USC Crosstown Film Festival November 20, 2004 at 5:20pm

Das screens Goodnight

Rahul Das, MFA 3 student, Film Directing Program has been selected to screen his short film "Goodnight" at the 3rd Annual Crosstown Film Festival, which will feature student films from AFI, Art Centre, CalArts, Chapman, LMU, UCLA and USC. The festival will be held on Nov 20, 2004, at the Eileen Norris Cinema Theatre on USC's University Park Campus, beginning 3pm and ending around 7:30pm. The event is free and will include dinner.

Ott's Blood Brothers Video hits MTV2

A group of Cal Arts Film Video students recently completed a music video for V2 Records and Seattle, Washington, based band THE BLOOD BROTHERS. The video was directed by Mike Ott (MFA2, Program in Film and Video) and features cinematography by Jason Harris (MFA1, Program in Film and Video) and Jay Keitel (BFA4, Program in Film and Video). JR Hughto (MFA2, Program in Film and Video) was the assistant director and Dave Fenster (MFA Graduate) was the editor. The video is set to air on MTV2 throughout November and December.

Lumen premieres My Dolly

Ria de Lumen, MFA 1 Film Directing Program has been selected to premiere her narrative short My Dolly at the Washington, DC Asian Pacific American Film Festival, October 13, 2004.

Rollins screens The War Inside

CalArts' student, Character Animation program filmmaker, Jahmad Rollins' animated film, The War Inside, has been selected by Savannah Film and Video Festival, and will be screened from Oct. 27 to Nov. 3 at the Trustees Theatre in Savannah College of Art and Design, in Savannah, Georgia. This animated short shows an illustrator struggling to give life to his ideas, dreaming about what to draw, and alternately killing and creating new subjects.

Students take honors at San Diego Asian Film Festival

CalArts student films have taken great honors in the 5th San Diego Asian
Film Festival, which opens on October 21, 2004, in San Diego, California.

Character Animation Faculty, Sharon Wu, will co-host a roundtable discussion
with participant animation filmmakers during the festival, with SDAFF's own
animation programmer, Sam Chen, a award-winning filmmaker.

The San Diego Asian Film Foundation (SDAFF) is a nonprofit organization
dedicated to educating the community about the rich diversity of the Asian
Pacific Islander culture through films and videos. The premiere event of the
SDAFF is its annual film festival in October. One of our goals is to build
stronger ties with area schools to foster discussion and education about
Asian Cinema. The SDAFF offers student internships, cultural literacy
programs with area high schools and colleges, and a nurturing environment
for artists in San Diego. Throughout the year, we hold special events such
as our Korean Cinema Showcase and Performers Showcase that highlight Asian
and Asian American cultures and talents.

Hahm's Mosition wins acclaim from Adobe

In the 2004 Annual Adobe Design Achievement competition, Experimental Animation student Junseo Hahm won second place within the Time Based Media category with his film, Mosition.

Mosition may be viewed in the 2004 Experimental Animation Showcase.

Kuckenbaker screens films The Potato Eater and La Pacifica

Cy Kuckenbaker, MFA student in Film Directing, on leave with Fulbright in Lithuania, has been selected to screen his work The Potato Eater, a documentary about the Peace Corps in the Shadow Fest Film Festival in Holland. Also his film La Pacifica was well received at the San Diego Film Festival.

Rollins' The War Inside screens at Savannah

This animated short shows an illustrator struggling to give life to his ideas, dreaming about what to draw, and alternately killing and creating new subjects.

Since its inception in 1998, the Savannah Film Festival has focused on enriching and educating an expanding audience, while promoting quality independent films and filmmakers. The festival features more than 50 films, selected from more than 600 entries in the categories of feature, short, animation, documentary and student competition, which are submitted from all over the world. The featured screenings represent a variety of independent filmmakers, while a cross section of workshops, lectures, receptions and special events gives the festival participants an opportunity to meet colleagues active in all areas of film production.

Helterbran screens The Badge in Shriekfest

Lord's Dinnnertime plays L.A. Shorts Fest

CalArts' student filmmaker, Nathaniel Lord's animated film, DinnerTime,
has been accepted by Los Angeles International Short Film Festival, and will be screened at the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood this Sunday, September 12th 2004. For screening time, please check ArcLight's website.

'DinnerTime' is also showcased in Nathaniel's same-titled video installation, which is currently exhibited at Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, as one selected piece in Fiction.Love-ultra new vision in contemporary Art, until 10/31.

Nathaniel Lord is currently a BFA-3 student in Character Animation program.

Vahdani screens Pink Balloons

Kataneh Vahdani, BFA 3, Character Animation Program has been chosen to screen her film “Pink Balloons” at the Newport Beach Film Festival (4/15-25, 2004) and the Short Shorts film festival in Tokyo, Japan (6/1-6/10).

Jean-Jacques Villard, BFA 4, Character Animation Program, has been chosen to screen his film Son of Satan at SAFO- Seoul, Korea, Annecy Film Festival, France June 2004, IFC Film Festival "In The Making", Colorado, and ZAGREB World Festival of Animated Films, Croatia Europe June 15-18, 2004 and Cannes Film Festival, May 2004.
